The Importance of Poetry

Found this fun little video while web surfing. I've been thinking on the significance of poetry and the "big picture" lately.

Afterwards I laughed at myself and got a little depressed.

  1. Charles Olson, exp/pomo poet from the 50s/60s, wrote an essay called "Human Universe" in which he argues that humans should stop pretending to be the center of the universe and think more on a human scale. It's fortunate, to him, that we are so puny and limited--it gives us humilitas. He's right. For so long, we've strutted around as G/d's privileged creation, but Copernicus dethroned us from that top spot. An btw, that was 500 years ago. Get over it, people! We are insignificant. That's why the words we use are so important--poetry is the greatest thing this fragile species in a corner of the Milky Way has ever produced.

  2. Here, have some narcissistic would-be Etude 2 lines:

"If I come to a pause, then all would be darkness.
If I weren’t moving, then gravity would break down."
