TGFID

Thank god for ice days. Now I can sit around thinking more about the poetic values I'm not sure I have.

Question for everyone else--if you read this: How are you embarking on your portfolio work? Have you started yet? Are you just jumping in and trying to write anything beyond our etudes, or are you making a concerted effort at some exact goal? Just wondering. Besides not being sure of my own poetics, I'm still not certain what I hope to accomplish in terms of creative output this semester.

Enjoy your R&R.

  1. I am attempting something along the lines of Pcoet, but am not quite sure that it's going to work out without coming off as arrogant. I'll post some stuff here and let you all be the judge. I feel very conflicted about the work, so I'll be happy to have some comments to help me decide what side of the fence to stand on.

  2. i think i told everyone what i was working on for my portfolio stuff didnt i? i have a poor memory. but anyways, im continuing a project that i started last semester. as for doing your own stuff you can kinda go two ways. you can either write a bunch of poems that arent related at all, usually taking inspiration from different sources for each poem. nothing at all wrong with that. or you can do a more collected set. i would say that if youre unsure at the moment, try a couple of poems that have nothing to do with each other, just try some stuff. maybe youll see something in some of your poems or you will become interested in something that you ran across in your reading or writings, and youll want to pursue that, leading to a more collected set. or, in the end you can stick with poems that dont have much of a relation, and explore your own writing style and themes.

i dont think that was helpful at all.

  3. I'm just sort of dicking around right now, getting reacclimated to thinking in my "poetic" mind frame all the time. I won't get down to it for at least another couple of weeks. For now it's on a semi-subconscious back burner.

  4. Strixney: (that's what you get for having so many monikers; I feel awkward calling you Strix when I'd never call you that in person)

    anyway.

glad I'm not the only one.

  5. What? But I only have two! -_-" You can call me either of the two in person. Other people are already doing it.

    Anyway.

I wouldn't worry. There's lots of time. Just write whatever comes out for now?

  6. I am thinking of your alter-egos.

I'm not worried--yet. But I know myself and my tendency towards the last minute.

  7. Oh. Them. They've been behaving quite well lately ^_^

It might be a good idea to have somebody hound you at progressively more irritating levels to complete your work, though I am not necessarily volunteering myself.

  8. It's good we are spending some time soon on the sequence and the series because it might help y'all think about doing Russ's second option, the related collection. There are many kinds, so be sure to take the time to read the Joseph Conte materials when I put them on reserve.

  9. I heard well-known poets say that they take a bunch of pooems and mix them haphazardly to make a collection.

Personally I think there is a relationhip or continuity of either theme, method, image - where one of them offers a thread that the writer follows and varies upon, with the whole collection designing a musical arc with beginning, climax and end. Does it sound very classical?

I would still like to hear from some of you how about work with blogs. However, if you can read this, it means I somehow got there.
